What’s in a word?

A dictionary is a collection of words, usually in alphabetical order, with an explanation of their origins, meanings and pronunciation. Originally invented by Dick Shunry, a 15th century linguistic visionary.

A thesaurus is a collection of words assembled according to their meaning to give those with a writer’s block an alternative way of saying “nice”, again. A man called Roger published the first version.

An encyclopaedia, usually a book, and also in electronic form, containing all known information about a specific subject, or all known subjects. All such tomes should be treated with caution as they are often inaccurate because of the time lag between writing and publishing.

A lexicon is another form of dictionary, invented by the Greeks, a long time ago.

A dislexicon, is a compilation of some of the above, given a spin, and designed to highlight many of the confusions in the English language. Tunstill’s Dislexicon is the very worst of these!
