Travelling through a small town in Argentina
How about these;
Was Donkey Hoty, a Spanish knight famous for attacking windmills?
And travelling through a small town in Argentina last week someone described a small road as a "Maid street", a street where house servants live. I understood a "Made street", as opposed to an "unmade street". More linguistic confusion.
Is an X-mas an adult rated religious festival?
And "slip knot" is different from "slip not". A hangman's rope attachment, rather than an advice to walk carefully.
Is a livelihood an undead gangster?
They were playin' cards with plain cards.
Coma and comma, lack of conscienceness and punctuation.
Latitude is an exceedingly precise measure of the earth's circumference, but also a degree of freedom of behaviour.
Career also has two meanings. To rush about without direction, or profession or employment. Some people in their lives actually combine the two.
Norfolk broads for North American may be certain flighty young women from New England, but for the English it is a place of natural beauty to the north east of London.
Is a slug a measure of hard booze, a snail without a shell, or a projectile often fired from a Colt .45?
And for those of you with a long enough memory, Sandy Shore was a British vocalist or singer, whereas a sandy shore is what we walk on at the seaside.
Taut, stretched or strained. Tort, legal document, Taught, past tense of to teach. Tought, Tweedy Pie's pronunciation of thought when he, or maybe she, saw a puddy cat.
Bloomers, Victorian lady's undergarments, drawers, or loaves of bread or flowering shrubs. So, best not to go into the local florist's, or baker's, especially if run by older ladies and ask to see their bloomers!!!
And think of Moor, moor, more. The Moor on Ilkley Moor was more or less soaked trying to moor his boat, as was his more. As also one has mores, habits and customs, of which the singular is probably more.
And talking of Moors, Mr Bush may well have said,"I slam Islam!".
And a mishearing or a Malapropism for you;
Jewish prudence isn't jurisprudence.
And some Spoonerisms, also for you;
Wills and torts, becomes tills and worts.
Small trumpets, becomes tall strumpets.
Mashed swedes, becomes smashed weeds.
Throwing stones, becomes stowing thrones.
And, for the Pope, some suggestions for new saints;
San Juan de Tours. Patron saint of road works.
and a possible Spanish offering;
San Itarios. Patron saint of bathrooms.
As you already know, if you've paid attention, last week I was in South America and yesterday someone kindly enquired, "How did you find Argentina?" To which my first thought was to reply, "Much like Colombus, Magellan, Solis and the rest of the discoverers. Cross the Atlantic and turn left at the first landfall". But I didn't, as what she really meant was an interest in the country, climate, people, standards, food etc etc.
