CHINESE WHISPERS – A passage from Tunstill’s Dislexicon
CHINESE WHISPERS – A passage from Tunstill’s Dislexicon
Chinese whispers was originally a Victorian parlour game in which whispered messages were intentionally misheard in order to create an amusing alternative phrase. In the First World War a famous character ‘Ole Bill received the message “Send five bob we’re going to a dance”, which had originated as the order “Pass the word along we’re going to advance”. Chinese whispers could be misheard as Chinese whiskers, which may not be cat food for oriental moggies, but could refer to eastern pudenda................... I rest my case.
